Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit the United States in the last week of September. The main reason is to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York. But the real focus will be on a possible meeting with US President Donald Trump.
Trade between India and the US has hit a rough patch. Talks that once showed promise have slowed. The US has placed 50% tariffs on Indian goods. Half of that is due to India’s trade rules. The other half is a penalty for India buying oil from Russia.
Earlier this year, Modi and Trump had agreed on a plan called “Mission 500”. The aim was to increase trade between the two countries to $500 billion by 2030. Negotiators on both sides were working on a deal. But Trump was not happy with the terms and asked for changes.
