Greater Noida police have arrested the brother-in-law of 26-year-old Nikki Bhati, who was burnt alive last week in what is being called one of the most shocking cases of dowry violence in the region.
Police said Rohit Bhati, 28, was picked up near Sirsa Toll Chauraha on Monday, two days after the incident. His father, Satveer Bhati, was also taken into custody shortly after. Both men had been on the run since Nikki’s death. With these arrests, all four accused named in the FIR — Nikki’s husband Vipin, his mother Daya, brother Rohit and father Satveer — are now behind bars.
According to police, Nikki was first beaten and then set ablaze at her home in Sirsa village on 21 August. Disturbing videos recorded by her elder sister Kanchan, who is also married into the same family, showed Nikki being dragged by her hair. Another clip showed her engulfed in flames as she stumbled down the stairs. She later died while being taken to hospital in Delhi.
Nikki’s father has alleged that the family faced years of harassment for dowry. He said they had already given a Scorpio SUV, a motorcycle and jewellery but the demands grew to ₹36 lakh in cash and a luxury car. “They killed my daughter in front of her child. They don’t deserve to live,” he said.
Vipin was caught on 23 August after a police encounter in which he was shot in the leg. His mother Daya was arrested the same day. Police said the couple’s five-year-old son also witnessed the brutality and gave a statement.
